How the Utility Credit System Works

Regardless of where you put your panels – on your roof or on a ground mount system, they are utilizing the bountiful radiance that North and South Carolina absorb during the day and selling them to the “Grid” (ie: Duke Energy or Duke Energy Progress in Western North Carolina). These utilities employ a system called Net-Metering (Net Energy Metering)

Make Your Meter Spin Backwards

Net Metering, also known as Net Energy Metering or NEM, is a utility billing system that credits solar energy system owners for the electricity they add to the grid. When you get solar install, the Utility installs a bi-directional meter that spins backwards when you are producing excess energy!

They will apply a credit to your electric bill for each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of solar electricity you send to the grid. When your solar panels aren’t producing electricity, you can take electricity from the grid and use the applied credit if applicable

What Questions Can I Answer For You?

Some of the most common questions answered.... There has to be some catch....

    Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What happens if it’s cloudy? Will I have two bills?

A: The utilities here use Net Metering, so you rack up “credit” during the day at full blast (UVA and UVB still come through clouds) and use them at night. You usually cover all your costs

Q: It can’t be $0 dollars. How much is the install?

A: It’s really 0$ up front for qualified homeowners! The cost of everything is baked into our proposals. We design the system to be equal or lower than your utility bill you are currently paying. You literally just swap the payment to pay off your solar.

Q: I don’t have a south facing roof. Will I have enough sun?

A: The cost of panels has dropped DRAMATICALLY in the last 10 years thanks to better tech. We make sure you are adequately covered to grab all the sun you can.

Q: I have an HOA agreement. They told me I can’t get solar.

A: If you live in North Carolina, the Supreme Court ruled that an HOA cannot prevent you from controlling your energy. You may just have to put it on the other side of the roof.
